As a human services nonprofit agency, we are committed to strengthening and securing families and the local community through comprehensive community building. “Abayomi”, a term from the Yoruba tribe in West Africa which means “a pleasant meeting place”, pronounced a-ba-yo-mee, is a 501(c)(3) human services nonprofit organization serving the metropolitan Detroit area. Abayomi provides community & economic development, education, and recreation programs to youth and families in the far Northwest and metropolitan Detroit.
Homebuyer Education Class – $50
We work with individuals and families to help improve their housing and/or financial situation. We provide individual and group counseling, and group education classes on various topics that promote financial security, economic self-sufficiency and home ownership. We can help you prepare for buying your first home. Our certified counselors will educate you on the home buying process, and help you prepare for the underwriting and lending requirements to successfully obtain home ownership. We participate in the Detroit Home Mortgage Program, helping aspiring homeowners to qualify for a mortgage.
If you would like to take the Homebuyer Education Class the registration fee is $50.00. Our Homebuyer Education Class meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Topics discussed include: Mortgage Affordability, Budgeting, Mortgage Loan Products, How to Make an Offer and more. We cover each step of the mortgage process from finding a realtor to closing on your home.
Once you successfully complete our Homebuyer Education Class you are eligible for Down Payment Assistance (DPA) of up to $15,000. MSHDA and other lenders we partner with have DPA programs and often times their funds can be combined

Abayomi is a HUD approved and MSHDA certified housing counseling agency. We are an Adopter of the National Industry Standards for Homeownership Counseling and Foreclosure Intervention Counseling. Our counselors maintain industry recognized certifications including NeighborWorks NCHEC certifications in Foreclosure Intervention, Homeownership Counseling, and Financial Capabilities. We partner with the Wayne County Treasurer’s Office and the United Community Housing Coalition for tax payment options and legal referrals.
If you are behind in your property taxes, we can help you get up to $30,000 to pay your bill through our Property Tax Assistance Program (PTA). The PTA is sponsored by MSHDA and is for delinquent taxpayers. You can have a mortgage or own your home. You will need the following to apply: one month’s proof of income, property deed, tax bill, and last year’s tax return with P&L statement if you are self-employed.
