"Basic Needs and Learning Resources to Help Your Family".

In an effort to strengthen the quality of services to families with young children, the Great Start Collaborative-Wayne (GSC-W) developed an assessment for family/community resource centers. During 2011, ten centers were assessed and rated as either a participant center working on an improvement plan or an endorsed Great Start Center meeting the established quality criteria.

The Guidance Center has three endorsed Community Resource Centers (CRC) throughout the Downriver area. Community Resource Centers are conveniently located in Southgate, River Rouge, and Belleville. Children, adults and families may visit any of the Community Resource Centers to:
• Check out library materials, enroll in an Adult/Child playgroup, and learn about parenting supports, local activities and assistance programs.
• Infant massage, after-school tutoring, and activities for K-8th grade students and GED tutoring for adults.

Starfish Family Services has two endorsed Family Resource Centers in Inkster and Taylor that offer a variety of free services to assist Wayne County parents and caregivers with children ages 0-6 years with educational and mental health support for their children and families. Services include:
• Parenting classes, support groups, family activity groups, socialization groups, and parent and child free play,
• Guest speakers for medical education and information
• Lending library
• Donation center
• Access to computers
• GED Prep Classes
• Mental health screenings
• Community resources and referral services.

Southwest Early Learning Communities’ Larkin location provides free training and resources to parents and caregivers so that they can prepare children to be “ready to learn” when the children enter school. The ELC hub:
• Promotes child development and early literacy
• Provides a safe, inviting space to learn new techniques and network with peers
• Mentors and supports parents, family members, friends and neighbors who care for young children
• Gives lessons in health, safety, nutrition, conflict resolution, child development, and learning through play
• Includes a lending library that offers educational materials that can be taken home
• Provides incentives and free childcare for those attending the training sessions
The sessions are conducted in both English and Spanish. Free trainings are available during the day or the evening, allowing participants to find a time that suits their schedule. To learn more call (313) 285-9323.

Leaps N Bounds located on the eastside of Detroit, offers free resources and trainings to help provide the best possible care for your children. These services include:
• Play and learn groups, and trainings with free childcare during the trainings.
